Boy Scout Troop 611

is chartered out of Sacred Heart Church, 11652 S. Church Street, in Chicago. It is a beautiful, historic, little church located in the Morgan Park neighborhood.

We are proud to have Sacred Heart sponsor this new unit.

Chicago Area Council proposes to sell Camp Hoover and Camp Owasippe

Since September 27, 2002, news has been released regarding the possible sale of the two Chicago Area Council campgrounds. Visit The Scarlet Sassafras for up-to-date information.

As leaders, we do not want this sale to happen. As of October 3, 2002, Chicago Area Council leaders are asking all scouts, scout leaders and other concerned people to write letters to the Chicago Area Council board officers and executive committee letters asking to reconsider the sale of these camps.

In the words of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of Boy Scouts:
Where is there a boy, even in these materialistic times, to whom the call of the wild and the open road does not appeal? Maybe it is the primitive instinct, anyway it is there. With that key a great door may be unlocked, if it is only to admit fresh air and sunshine into the lives that were otherwise grey. ... Through Scouting the boy has a chance to deck himself in frontier kit as one of the great brotherhood of backwoodsmen. He can track and follow sign; he can signal, he can light his fire and build his shack and cook his grub. He can turn his hand to many things in pioneering and camp-craft.

As leaders, we ask: how are our scouts supposed to experience camp without a council camp to attend? How are we to put the "outing" in scouting when the paid professional staff who runs the Chicago Area Council is proposing to sell off our campgrounds?

If you value the scout program, please take time to write letters to the following people BEFORE October 11, 2002.

Thank you,
David Hoogland, Scoutmaster Troop 611
Karen Hoogland, Troop Committee Chairman Troop 611

EVERYTHING I NEED TO KNOW I LEARNED AT SCOUT CAMP

Everyone is good at something.
Take a buddy with you, it's safer that way.
Old friends are just as important as new friends.
Marshmallows taste better when toasted over a fire.
Always check your shoes before you put your feet in them.
Be a sibling to every scout.
Don't pick the wild flowers.
Reading the trail signs helps you find your way.
When your making something, get your hands dirty.
After being away for more than two days, home is almost like heaven!
We received this list in an email, from another scouter,
the author is unknown.
